Based on the idea that the competitiveness of the university extends to national competitiveness, universities worldwide have fostered research-oriented universities and performed various works to enhance the competitiveness of the existing universities with the active support of the government. Various countries such as Germany, Japan, and Singapore have already developed and operated programs at the government level to foster world class research-oriented universities. Last year, Korea also developed the WCU (World Class University) project as a new program to try to foster world class research-oriented universities. In this session, we shall draw implications for future improvements by discussing not only the fostering plan for World Class University and related tasks, but also our ambitious WCU project.
