Live Black History is a program of cultural education (for boys and girls in middle and high school) that presents a survey course in African-American history, oratorical fests, and essay contests, which all culminate in a tournament of local African-American history challenges between Bay Area (California) teams.
Though the primary focus of Live Black History entails introducing students to African-American history and preparing them for competitive academic challenges rooted therein, students will also learn critical reading and writing skills vital to their academic success, whether measured in terms of standardized test scores or graduation rates.
The Excelsus Foundation, based in Oakland, California, is an educational trust that actively works to narrow the achievement gap between African-American and other students by providing mentorship, academic enrichment, and peer affinity year-round.
