The Impact of Complex Systems on Ecological Economics Presenter: Stuart Kauffman Date: 11/12/2010 12:00PM Stuart Kauffman, one of the world's most eminent scientists — a founder of the field of complex systems science, pioneer of biocomplexity research, and MacArthur "Genius" Fellow — visits the Gund for an informal discussion about how complex systems relates to the conceptualization of the field of ecologic economics. STAY TUNED: Tuesday 12/7 at 12:30PM, Stuart Kauffman will return for a follow-up conversation from this 11/12 Gund Tea "Complexity Theory & Ecological Economics. The conversation will start with the following prompt, and take the shape that participants give it: Ecological Economists often talk about complexity (in ecologic systems, economic systems, social systems), but don't necessarily have a full grasp of this term. Last discussion we talked about the frontiers of complexity studies (particularly the need to look at nonalgorithmic patterns and developments). Where can ecological economics take up some of these concepts/frontiers to apply them to their emerging transdiscipline? This event is part of the weekly Gund Tea Series, an opportunity for affiliates of the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics and the broader University community to engage in robust discussion about topical research, current events, and relevant theory. The Teas host visiting scholars and research associates from around the world, as well as some of the Gund's very own fellows & students.
